My home was recently burglarized while I was away. Can some wireless routers detect cell phones trying to connect by WiFi in the vicinity and log information that can identify the specific cell phone? If that's possible, I think it'll help in catching the burglars.

Possibly, but I don't think they usually do unless the device actually tries to connect.

The information almost certainly won't be available without setting it up beforehand, and MACs are pretty useless anyway.

I'm thinking there are ways of detecting cell phone signals and logging them, but probably not legally in the U.S. It'd be nice to be able to identify cell phone signals around my property to catch the bad guys.
